Air India Airlines is the national flag carrier of India with a network of passenger and cargo services around the world. The company is a part of National Aviation Company of India Limited and the only state-owned airline of India. Air India Airlines was created due to Air India's merge with Indian Airlines. The company's main base is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Mumbai and a biggest hub is and Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi. The airline provids service to 130 international and domestic destinations worldwide, including 12 gateways in India with Air India Express, a subsidiary of Air India. Air India Airline will join Star Alliance in 2009.
Air transport was born in India in 1911 when Henri Piquet, flying a bi-plane, carried mail from Allahabad to Naini Junction. The scheduled services in India started in 1932.
In 21st century Air India introduced new services to Shanghai in China, and two new US destinations: Newark, New Jersey (Newark Liberty) and Los Angeles, California (LAX). To expand business into the low-cost sector, Air India Airline started a new subsidiary, Air India Express in 2004. Air India Express is operating on Gulf routes, and to Singapore. AI expanded its international routes to include non-stop flights from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Air India merged with Indian Airlines to create a merged airline consisting of 200+ aircraft in 2007. The new airline's headquarters remained in Mumbai and the company holds a fleet of 130+ aircraft of both Boeing and Airbus aircraft. It also possible that Alliance Air and Air India Express will merge to create the new low-cost airline. The combined company has gained membership within the Star Alliance and expands its own network to be one of Asia's largest carriers. The announcement was made at the annual Star Alliance meeting in December 2007. Air India will become a full member of Star Alliance by 2009.
