Martinair Air Lines is an airline based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The company operates passenger and cargo services to more than 50 destinations worldwide, with more than 20 are in the Mediterranean area. Martinair Air Lines offers scheduled, charter and air taxi services. Company's main base is at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, main hubs at Miami International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport. The airline has additional hubs at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Sharjah International Airport. The airline sometimes flies instead of KLM planes and serves some destinations with KLM code.
Martinair Air Lines was founded on May 24, 1958 ander name Martin's Air Charter, with one plane and 5 employees. In 1963 the company sold 49% of the company to 4 equal company shareholders (12.25% each). KLM later purchased the 51% of shares. The airline name was changed to Martinair Holland in 1966. I in 1967 the company started service to the United States. Martinair became all jet-powered in year 1971. The first aircraft with the "Martinair Cargo" name was introduced in 1991. The same year word "Holland" was dropped from all aircraft. Martinair bought 40% share in Colombian carrier TAMPA Cargo, Medellín in 1996. Martinair President Martin Schröder retired from the company in 1998. The same year, the European Commission in Brussels declined KLM's offer to purchase more shares, which would have made KLM the 100% owner. In 2003 Martinair increased its ownship in TAMPA Cargo to 58%, becoming Tampa's main shareholder. In 2007, Martinair announced that it wanted to have only one shareholder, preferably KLM. As of November 2007, Martinair ceased their short haul operations opting to international services.
