Finnair Air Lines Plc is Finland's largest airline and the flag carrier, with its main hub at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Finnair Air Lines and its subsidiary companies operate at both the domestic and international air travel markets in Finland. The company is a member of the Oneworld codeshare alliance. Finnair Air Lines transported 8.8 million passengers in 2006 on flights of 55 international and 15 domestic destinations. There are also about 50 seasonal charter-flight destinations worldwide. The company has not had a fatal accident since 1963, nor has any severe damage to its aircraft. The company ranked as the second-safest airline of all time (behind Australia's Qantas).

In 1987 Finnair ordered the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the first aircraft was delivered on December 7, 1990. The first service with the MD-11 took place in 1990, operating a flight from Helsinki to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Kar-Air and Finnaviation airlines became wholly owned by Finnair and were integrated into Finnair operations in 1997. In 1997 Finnair Oyj (Finnair Plc) became the company's official name. In 1999, the company joined the Oneworld alliance. Finnair Air Lines recycled the old Aero name and established Aero Airlines, a new airline based in Tallinn, Estonia in 2001. In 2003 the airline acquired ownership of a Swedish low-cost operator - Flynordic, which operates regional flights in Scandinavia. The State of Finland is the controlling shareholder of the company (57.04%). Finnair Air Lines' stock is listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. As of March 2007, the Finair employed 9,447 staff. The company is the sixth oldest airline in the world.
Finnair Air Lines operates from its Helsinki-Vantaa base to Asia and North America, and extending its European operations with the introduction of new Embraer jets. The regional operations are partly carried out in cooperation with Finncomm Airlines which operates fleet of ATR and Embraer jets.
